Wildlife guide

faunoteca

A guide to Brazilian wildlife, starting with snakes, written for non-specialists.

faunoteca home page, with the title and a photo of a snake among leaves

The challenge

Information about snakes tends to be either too technical or unreliable, and people who find a snake need to know what to do right away. The guide had to be easy to read and cite official sources for anything about health or law.

What was built

  • Species and family profiles, with photos and what sets each one apart
  • Occurrence maps generated from public scientific records
  • A "I found a snake" guide, with what to do and what not to do
  • A legal keeping guide, explaining what the law allows
  • Pages per biome and search by common or scientific name

Decisions that mattered

01

Official source or it stays out

Anything about health or law cites its source in the footer: Brazil's Ministry of Health, the Butantan Institute, federal law and environmental agencies.

02

Freely licensed photos

Photos come from Wikimedia Commons, credited to each author. A species without a reliable photo has no photo, instead of a random image.

03

Maps generated by script

Maps come from GBIF records and IBGE boundaries, through a script that can be rerun when the data changes.

Technology

  • HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Python for the maps
  • GBIF and IBGE data
